The Roanoke Valley is located in the southwest of the Commonwealth of Virginia between two mountain ranges, Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. The City of Roanoke and its surrounds are considered to be a Metropolitan Statistical Area having a population was estimated at 300,000 in 2009, making the region the largest MSA west of Richmond. The Valley is composed of the Cities of Roanoke and Salem, Town of Vinton and, Counties of Roanoke, Botetourt, Franklin and Craig.
Roanoke was founded prior to the Civil War as a rail transport hub; its rail heritage continues into the 21st Century, maintaining its importance by moving goods as well as people. The Virginia Museum of Transportation located downtown Roanoke reflects railroading’ significant contribution to economic development of the Valley as well as Norfolk & Western’ use of steam technology.
Over the latter half of the 20th Century the Roanoke Valley shifted toward a more service based economy, predominately Banking & Finance and HealthCare. Wells Fargo, a national bank, established a significant presence as well as more than two dozen regional and community banks. Carilion Roanoke Memorial is the only Level I Trauma Center for both Adults and Children west of Charlottesville and is partnered with VA Tech in bio-medical research.
The Roanoke Valley is set against a beautiful landscape of hills and mountains. Outdoor activities invite many visitors annually to this magnificent playground.
